Cockroaches in Coffee Machines

Coffee machines share the same warm, moist conditions as dishwashers — and German cockroaches take full advantage.

The same problem, a different appliance

Espresso and pod coffee machines generate consistent warmth and moisture inside their internal water reservoirs and drip trays — very similar conditions to a dishwasher, and just as attractive to German cockroaches.

Ground coffee residue and sugar spills around the machine add an easy food source, which is often enough to sustain a small colony without it ever being obvious from the outside.

Warning signs specific to coffee machines

A faint musty smell when the machine has been idle overnight, small droppings on the benchtop underneath the drip tray, or roaches appearing when the machine is moved or cleaned are all signs worth acting on.

Getting it treated properly

As with dishwashers, treatment focuses on the surrounding cupboards, benchtop gaps and kitchen harbourage areas — using targeted baiting rather than spraying near or inside electrical appliances.
